Devlog 1

Hey everyone

I got something big to share. Something that I have been working on for the past year.

I’m making a computer game!

A murder mystery detective game, set in the world of Meridian Malice, where you solve mysteries in this strange little fantasy universe I’ve been building.

The idea started while I played The Case of the Golden Idol (seriously, play it if you haven’t – it’s brilliant). I thought, this kind of mystery game format would be perfect for Meridian Malice. I’m also inspired by games like Return of the Obra Dinn and Chants of Sennaar, which have solving mysteries as the main game mechanic. It’s probably no surprise that I love games that let me piece together the story from clues, seeing as my entire archive of worldbuilding is based on making in-world document to convey information.

Anyway, despite having only some basic programming skills, I figured, how hard can it be? I already know how to do the art, and the game mechanics didn’t seem too complicated. So I set out to learn how to make a computer game.

That was about a year ago.

I ended up using Godot as the engine. It’s free, open-source, and once I got the hang of it (after a lot of tutorials and trial and error), it is surprisingly easy to use.

And now… it’s finally starting to come together.

So here it is – some early gameplay footage from the first level I made. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m excited (and nervous) to finally share a glimpse of it with you.

There is so much more to do and I want to keep you all updated on my progress, so consider this the first of many dev logs to come.

I would love to hear your thoughts about the game, so please, tell me what you think on either Reddit or on the Discord.

What even is Meridian Malice?

Well, this all started as a worldbuilding project several years back. It’s been my little hobby were I combined fantasy writing, illustration and graphic design to flesh out the fantasy world I have been dreaming up.

So if you can’t wait for the game, you can dive into the lore of this world now or join the Discord to discuss the game, the world, and anything else.
