Elves and Humans have very different bathing habits when it comes to keeping clean. We asked Lily (a Human) and Fiona (an Elf) to discuss the differences between the two, now that they have visited both Human and Elven bathhouses.
A Discussion of Bathing
Fiona: Humans could certainly get in the habit of bathing more often, no offence Lily. There is a distinct Human smell if you ever walked through the Low-Ward… Some of them could hardly have taken a bath this year…
Lily: From a Human point of view, the Elves seem almost obsessed with bathing. Many of them say they feel dirty if they don’t get to bathe every flame. But since Fiona forced me to join her, I can appreciate bathing more often, just maybe not to the extent of the Elves though.
Fiona: When we visited the Human bathhouse, we learned that Humans bathe in small barrels, alone in tiny rooms. How boring is that? No one to talk to, no one to scrub your back, not even any attendants to bring you food. Humans are so shy they even fully dress before exiting the stall.
Lily: Elves, on the other hand, have no shame at all. They stroll around without a care in the world, bathing together in large pools. It was quite a shock the first time Fiona invited me…
Fiona: Poor girl blushed almost as red as me.
Lily: I’m not sure I will ever get used to the… sights…
Fiona: One other big difference is that Humans soap and scrub when in the bath, while Elven bathhouses have a special soap room for cleaning and rinsing with running water. You see, you need to be clean before you enter the shared pools, we don’t want to swim around in your filth.
Lily: The Elven bathhouses are so grand, the Elizeium in particular is like a palace. Humans bathe because we must, while the Elves have turned it into an extravaganza. They bring their friends, eat food, exercise, look at art, and socialize, all within the great bathhouses. There are even rooms for sleeping. I bet some Elves can spend weeks in there without leaving.
Fiona: Humans are indeed very utilitarian in their bathing. They spend no more time than needed, only do it when they are really dirty, and always alone. They even have a little clothing shop at the Tepid Barrel so workers and travelers can easily clean up and change into fresh clothes to get past the guards to the Mid-Ward. Quite a clever business idea, seeing how many Low-Warders are turned away at the gate for being smelly or dirty.
