Roserock Fashion
Fashionable Southern Liberty
As so often in fashion, the dress mirrors the temperament of the people. The southern style of Roserock have been called simple or even primitive, but that is missing the point entirely. Rather than simple it’s freeing, rather than primitive it’s purposefully haphazard.
The southern culture value removing the superfluous to make room for what is best in life. “Freedom is nothing” is a common saying which takes their attitude to the extreme—if only you could rid yourself of everything you would be free. Though somewhat ironically, we can also notice that it takes great effort to appear effortless.
But we are here to talk about clothes and not philosophy, are we not? The Smock is the foundation of the southern fashion. It replaces the undergarments we are used to north of Roserock and is made from a thin, flowy fabric, often in neutral colors. It comes in many styles with different cuts and lengths, but most commonly have wide openings for the arms and is split at the hips with the front and back flaps flowing past the knee. Sleeve lengths vary from none at all to running past the hand. Hooded smocks are the standard, but hoodless variants are used for more formal occasions.
Thicker, loose billowing clothes are then worn on top. Robes, cloaks, and long knitted fabrics wrapped around the body are staples of southern dress. For colder weather, undershirts, underskirts, or tight wraps are worn underneath the smock.
The expression “running away from your scarf”, used to tell someone they are in too much of a hurry, originates from the leg scarf, which is notoriously difficult to wear without it falling off. It’s said to take many dozades to master so if you ever see an elf strolling around effortlessly in a leg scarf, they are almost certainly a native of the south.
Did you know?
The smock was originally, and still is, used as an underlayer to armor. The first known usage of the garment was Emperor Falnori Esko over 9000 years ago.
Esko is also the basis of our units of measurements. He was said to be the perfect elf—his arm length was exactly 100 times the width of his pinkie nail, his spear throw exactly 100 times his arm length, and his legion could march 100 times his spear throw in a flame. Which is why, even to this flame, we measure lengths in nails, arms, throws, and leagues.
